By Aditi Pai

applsappsforhealthcarepros

Last November, MobiHealthNews compiled a list of Apple’s top apps for doctors, nurses, and patients. Since then, Apple has added some new apps to its list and taken off many others.

In September 2011, Apple added a new section to its AppStore for healthcare professionals that included about 50 apps designed for iPad and iPhone users. A little more than a year later the section was slightly reworked: Apple added a new subsection for nurses, changed the name of its “point of care” section to “patient education” and added a few new apps to most of the existing subsections. Apple now recommends 118 apps for healthcare professionals.

In the pages to follow is MobiHealthNews’ guide to Apple’s list along with a few screenshots and a short description. Skip ahead to app categories using these links: Reference Apps; Medical Education Apps; EMR & Patient Monitoring Apps; Nursing Apps; Imaging Apps; Patient Education Apps; Personal Care Apps.

Personal Care Apps

Definition: If you think this section muddies the waters, we tend to agree. These were the handful of consumer apps found in the “Apps for Healthcare Professionals” section. As best we can figure it, Personal Care Apps are a list of suggestions that physicians and nurses might consider recommending to their patients. That’s great since it drives awareness of a few consumer health apps, but it seems to defeat the point of the section, right?

PersonalCare

By far the largest category, personal care apps cater to patients' needs. Apple's list didn't lose any apps in this section. The new apps include MyRA and iMuscle 2, an update to last year's iMuscle. Withings Health Companion from last year's roundup is now Withings Health Mate. While WiScale is still in the iPad section of the personal care apps list, the description now says the app will soon stop being supported by Withings and asks users to download Withings' new app, Withings Health Mate.

MyChart
