AI governance has changed during presidential administrations over the past two decades, with the Obama administration focusing on integrating data and technology across government functions, and the Trump administration rolling back prior regulations and issuing a new AI action plan.
Aneesh Chopra, the first chief technology officer of the United States, appointed by President Barack Obama and the current chair of the Arcadia Institute, joins HIMSSCast for an in-person interview to discuss the evolution of technology in healthcare and policy change over the years.
"When you have an economic model that rewards the use of these capabilities to deliver a better outcome, you end up getting more of it," Chopra said.
"I would say we got an A-, B+ on data delivery. We got maybe a C or a C+ on true liquidity of data, maybe an A on adoption of electronic health records, and payment reform is obviously getting a mixed score, maybe that gets a B, but more promising still. I'd say all of these initiatives are bipartisan, and you can see the throughline with the Trump administration and Biden and then back to Trump."
